Black-necked cranes are a scared bird of Bhutan, that migrates from Tibet in the month of November. According to the tradition, the cranes will circle the monastery three times on arrival in a clockwise direction as a mark of their devotion before finally landing in the center of the marsh. It happens once every year on 11th November.
For travelers, it’s not only an opportunity to experience one of Bhutan’s most famous festivals- it’s also a chance to pay homage to this scared bird while supporting the community working towards the protection of them.

1
Day1- 8thNovember
Bagdogra airport arrival. Transfer to Phuentsholing. Upon your arrival at the airport, a cab will transfer the group to Phuentsholing – the Bhutan border town, 3.5 hours away from Bagdogra.
Enroute, we pass through a beautiful stretch, flanked by tea plantations and national parks on both sides of the road. We will reach the border by evening. The moment you step into Bhutan land, literally, when you take those footsteps, you will immediately see how different the two towns on either side of the border are.

Day2-9th November
Road Trip from Phuentsholing to Paro . After breakfast, we shall go to the permit office.The permit take some time processing and we shall leave Phuentsholing by 11 am.The drive to Thimpu is long, about six hours with stops including lunch. But it is very beautiful.

Day3-10th November
You will begin the day by driving to Gangtey passing through the beautiful scenic mountain and 108 stupas at Dochula Pass. You’ll also pass-through dense forests of oak trees and rhododendrons and arrive at Gantey village, where you’ll visit Gangtey Monastery, the only Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan. From Gangtey, you can see the picturesque Black Mountain range as well as Phobjika Valley, the winter habitat of the black-necked cranes. Check in at farmstay and take rest. In the evening take a leisure walk in the valley.

Day4-11th November
After breakfast, watch black neck crane festival which is celebrated every year at the courtyard of Gangtay Goenpa in the Phobjika Valley. The festival is an occasion for the locals to rejoice and celebrate the arrival of this endangered and majestic bird which becomes an inseparable part in their daily lives during the winter months. The annual black necked crane festival is organized to generate awareness and understanding on the importance of conserving the endangered Black Necked Cranes. The festival includes cultural programs such as folk songs and dances (some with black necked crane themes) and mask dances performed by the local people, crane dances and environmental conservation themed dramas and songs by school children. After lunch take a leisure walk in the valley to see the black necked cranes & visit the Black Necked Crane Conservation Centre. Overnight in farmstay at Gangtey.

Day5- 12th November
The drive from Gangtay to Punakha is about three hours. Visit the Fort- Punakha Dzong which is in between the two rivers mochu and phochu, suspension bridge & Fertility Temple (if time permits). Overnight at the Camp which is situated above the valley near the beautiful river.

Day6-13th November
After breakfast, go for river rafting (1 hour on mochu river) and then travel back to Thimphu.
We will visit- Buddha point, King’s Memorial Chorten (built in memory of the third King of Bhutan who reigned from 1952-1972), Dodhena, Smethoka and Thimphu Dzong (Fort). Travel back to Paro and overnight at home stay in Paro.

Day7-14th November
After breakfast, hike to Tigers’ Nest (Taktsang) and indulge in healing traditional hot stone bath in the evening

Day8-15th November
Drive from Paro to Siliguri. Overnight in Siliguri.

Day9-16th November
We leave for the airport at Bagdogra, and go back to our home cities .
